Congratulations to EBB PhD student, Ben Wiens, who was awarded KU’s Graduate Student Distinguished Service Award.

Wiens was nominated for this award by his advisor (Dr. Jocelyn Colella, assistant professor in EEB) and peers for his efforts in near-peer teaching and mentorship in molecular and computational sciences (e.g., BIMOL, Genomics Working Group, Mammal Coffee Hour) and his significant direct contributions to the growth and maintenance of KU Mammalogy Research Collections.

Dr. Colella said, “These ‘invisible’ contributions strengthen our community and it’s nice to see his efforts formally recognized at the institutional level. We were delighted to have the committee chair, Ric Steele Jr, surprise Ben with the award in-person during our lab meeting. Congratulations, Ben, and thank you for serving the KU community!”

The Graduate Student Award for Distinguished Service was established in 1983 and is presented annually to a graduate student who has demonstrated a genuine commitment to serving the University of Kansas while maintaining a high level of academic achievement.
