Bad Biodiversity: How Hollywood Lies About Nature

On Friday, Sept. 22, EEB Professor Rich Glor is giving a public talk at Sunflower Bike & Outdoor at 6 PM. Glor will cover the Top 5 ways that nature is misrepresented in popular film and media. The talk is free and you can register at the Sunflower website.

"We live in a golden age of film-making, where Hollywood spends billions on CGI and elaborate sets that transport us to entirely new worlds. Too often though, film-makers distort or disregard what we know about life here on earth, resulting in egregious misrepresentations of nature in popular films,” Glor said. "In addition to ruining films for nature lovers, Hollywood’s carelessness reinforces misconceptions about life that have persisted since the dark ages, and contributes to a broader decline in modern society’s concern for the truth. Glor will discuss the five ways that popular films misrepresent nature, why it matters, and what we can learn from these mistakes." 
The exploration of “bad biodiversity” will include examples drawn from classics like “Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark” as well as recent hits like “Bullet Train” starring Brad Pitt."
